Boston Scientific, is the world's leading medical device company dedicated to less-invasive medicine. Its customer fulfillment center located in Quincy, MA, USA uses an automated conveyor system to route totes to the appropriate pick zones. The operation requires 100% uptime of the automated system; so much so in fact, that it was designed to be fault-tolerant. The conveyor system routes approximately 1000 totes/hour through 26 divert zones. As a tote reaches a divert zone, it's barcode is scanned, transmitted to a multi-threaded and fault-tolerant Xbase++ application which decides if the tote needs to be diverted or if it is to continue on. The Xbase++ application processes an average of 7 divert requests per second, with a worst case scenario of 26 divert requests received simultaneously. It uses Xb2.NET for socket communications with the conveyor hardware and SQLExpress for interfacing with the host system running on a clustered MS SQL Server database.

CompuCar, a European SDH (Self Drive Hire) insurance provider, uses Xb2.NET web services to allow car rental companies to instantly validate driver details for insurance purposes. J.D. Edwards OneWorld claims to provide an enterprise wide management system, however at OSF Inc., it is an Xbase++ application that delivers the real-time production control. With simultaneous connections to a DB2 based OneWorld system and a SQL Server 2000 labour management database, the Shop Floor Control (SFC) system manages labour, inventory and work flow throughout the organization. The system runs 24 hrs/day, 7 days/wk on hundreds of terminals and several disparate plants. 100% uptime is imperative. Using advanced SQLExpress error and connection management, SFC gracefully manages sporadic network disconnections to keep on running, with zero down time.

With many hundreds of installations throughout North America, Australia and Europe, RADIO BEACON, is a leading warehouse management system. Comprising of over 11MB of source code, it is a large, complex system that was originally developed in CA-Clipper 5.2. By late 1998, the source code was ported to Xbase++ using a web front end and the ACE Wrappers (which provided an interface to Advantage Database Server). The software proved so successful, that larger and larger clients wanted to use RADIO BEACON. By the year 2000, it became necessary once again to convert the system. This time it was fully converted from DBF based data access to SQL using SQLExpress. RADIO BEACON now runs on Oracle, DB2, MS-SQL Server and Advantage Database Server. The story does not end here however, in 2002 when Xb2.NET became available, SOAP web services were added to RADIO BEACON in order to provide seamless functionality to external accounting systems.
